José Alvarado

I am an experimentalist. I recently finished my PhD at AMOLF (Amsterdam) with Gijsje Koenderink. There I worked on active gels that exert internal contractile forces. Now I've started my postdoc at MIT with Peko Hosoi. I'm working to establish a system of rotationally excited hard-rod fluids. These could be used to make small pumps. I'm also contemplating how to design synthetic models of active matter.

Shiladitya Banerjee

is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the James Franck Institute, University of Chicago. His research interests include the physics of cytoskeleton, mechanics of eukaryotic cells and tissues, and the physics of bacteria.

Aparna Baskaran

is a faculty member at in the physics department at Brandeis University. She uses the tools of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics to study dynamical phenomena in driven soft materials and active fluid systems.

Dapeng (Max) Bi

Bulbul Chakraborty

is a condensed matter theorist at Brandeis University. Her recent interests have focussed on structures created by stress, especially in granular materials and non-Brownian suspensions. She has also been studying synchronization of "cells" modelled as chemical reactor coupled by diffusion. She is interested in extending some of these ideas to active systems.

Hugues Chaté

is a senior scientist at CEA-Saclay France. Until recently, he was the convenor of the Advanced Study Group on the "Statistical Physics of Collective Motion" at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden, Germany.

I am a theoretical biophysicist and faculty member in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Rochester Institute of Technology. is a professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, in the departments of Mathematics and Chemical and Biological Engineering. He works on modeling cellular and tissue mechanics, especially in developmental and morphogenetic processes. is a faculty member of the Department of Physics at Oakland University. Fernando Peruani

is a faculty member at the Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis, France. He works on active matter and biological physics. Among other problems, he has studied self-propelled rod models with the intention of understanding experiments with gliding bacteria (Myxococcus xanthus), highlighting the difference between polar and apolar alignment in systems of (polar) SPPs. One of the central questions he has addressed is the frequently observed transition in active systems from a diluted (individual) to highly clustered (collective) phase, as observed in myxobacteria. Harald Pleiner

is a (retired) research scientist from the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz. His main interests are the generalized hydrodynamic description of complex soft matter as well as driven, non-equilibrium pattern states - two aspects that are present in active matter. Pawel Romanczuk

is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Fisheries. His main interests are application of stochastic processes and statistical physics to biological problems, in particular emergence of collective behavior. Among others he has been working on models for collective motion in the absence of explicit velocity-alignment interactions and on the derivation of coarse-grained equations of motion from microscopic Langevin-type models. Christoph Schmidt

Ulrich Schwarz

is a faculty member in both physics and biology at Heidelberg University, Germany. He works on the physics of soft matter and biological systems, in particular on cell mechanics and adhesion. One subject of particular interest in his group is traction force microscopy and models which can help to understand how (and why) forces are generated at the interface between cells and their environment. is a Research Fellow in the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.
